How Is The Course Delivered

The course is focused on linking your current work practice to a range of contemporary theories and policies regarding working with young children. You will plan and carry out supported tasks and projects set throughout the three years.  You will undertake study in areas such as child development, communication, language and literacy, inclusion, health and management issues in early years.

In addition you will gain practitioner status by successfully completing the professional practice modules through weekly work placement during the two years.  This course is a mixture of college based sessions combined with work experience.

How Will I Be Assessed

Assessment is via assignments, which take a variety of forms: including written tasks, observations, child study, presentations and research projects. In addition you will need to pass your professional practice unit which comprises 800 hours of assessed work practice with children aged 0-8.

What Can I Do After The Course

On completion of the course, many students choose to gain employment.  A growing number choose to complete a third year of study to gain a full Honours Degree.  It is currently possible to join the long EPD training pathway for Early Years Professional Status when you complete your Foundation Degree and to study for a BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies.

Some HND students, on completion of a third year, apply for the PGCE programme to gain Qualified Teacher Status. Opportunities for further study then exist at postgraduate level, for those who wish to progress further, this includes the MA Childhood Studies.

If you wish to progress to initial Teacher Training you must have Mathematics, English and a Science Subject at GCSE Grade C or above. If you wish to undertake Early Years Professional Status you must have English and Mathematics Grade C or above.
